Fasting

  • Aug. 21st, 2008 at 10:13 PM

I would like to take a moment to break from my normal absence in posting to comment on a current issue I'm having. Even though I was finally able to secure a lovely part time job through Park and Rec, ensured employment means going through a slew of tests to prove I'm not a creepy crawling  evil thing of the underworld. Most frustrating of these tests is a medical examination that includes blood work. Having bloodwork done apparently means fasting for 12 hours.
Now in theory, this shouldn't be a problem. I've gone 12 hours without eating or drinking many a time, usually not on purpose, but nonetheless without effort.  In fact, since I will be sleeping for 8 of these hours, it really shouldn't be a problem at all.
Of course now that I've been forbidden to eat or drink anything I feel like I've been wandering the desert for days. My throat is parched and cold water is like a heavenly vision. My stomach is grumbling and I can't put an end to the desires for  treats...mainly orange sherbet  and peanut butter and something else sandwiches. This is all regardless of the fact that I had a huge lunch and dinner only two hours ago. Plus a full water bottle and a cup of tea.
I have a friend who celebrates Ramadan and I'm not sure how she does it at all. My resolve is nearly nonexistant already and I can eat again by noon tomorrow.
So well, if you want to torture me, I've presented the perfect option. Don't withhold food from me, psssh that doesn't bother me at all. Instead, keep it attainable and just tell me I can't have it.
BLAH.

Revisiting Europe

  • Jun. 29th, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Alright, not really.. but this week I rented "In Bruges" because there were signs for it everywhere while I was in London and it looked generally interesting. Now I thought I would have another Orphanage catastrophe where I would underestimate the general public's knowledge of less-than-mainstream-movies and not be able to get a copy of In Bruges for weeks and weeks, but it was right there when I walked in. That was nice  guess. Actually that had many more copies of this film, and not all of them were checked out, which is ironic I guess.
Anyway, back to the movie. I thought it was a nice film. It's one of those horrible dark comedies where you laugh  and then feel like a total jerk for laughing, and by the end of the movie you not only feel horrible for laughing earlier but you're also not sure if what happened earlier was meant to be funny or if you're just a sick human being.
In short, the characters have a lot of issues.
But what I really found intriguing was the films handling of the idea of tourism, given my recent European jaunt.  What does the country we visit owe us as tourists? And what do we owe that country? The idea of being in a place of such historical value, yet refusing to enjoy it was something that frustrated me endlessly about my study abroad colleagues. Why can't people just say "Alright, I'm here, so I'm going to enjoy what this place has to offer" instead of nitpicking the negative? Maybe we just don't enjoy history and architecture anymore...
The film also offered some interesting moments into the European stereotype of Americans, which see to be more or less amusing to all. Plus it was just nice to see Colin Farrell looking awkward and put out. Anyway, I enjoyed the movie, so go and watch it. Its really twisted though...
On the completely other level, since I always rent two completely different movies...not on purpose or anything, just because I'm weird, I also rented "Be Kind Rewind," which was an unexpected treat. That is defiantly  the feel good movie that "In Bruges" is not, and I was crying by the end of it. It is nice to see such a sweet, family-ish movie. Well, its nice just to see a movie with a little bit of uniqueness and character. It had a lot of interesting moments that made you go...hmm..
So, to wrap this all up, I accomplished absolutely nothing this weekend because I was watching movies and then pondering about them. And that's not really what I should be wasting time doing, but I can't seem to help it.
Of course, then I watched the most recent episode of Doctor Who, which is a completely different problem all in itself. Now I'm going to be running that through my head for the rest of the week. Billie piper sure looked, well, odder than she did in the past. Not that I really can tell what it is, but something about her face has been bothering me. And, since I'm already on the topic of being bothered by the episode, I was also a bit annoyed that every blooming thing the Doctor has mumbled about this season seems to tie into the finale. Really, we can live with a bit of random mumbling, a few red herrings aren't going to kill us. I'd like to think that there's a bigger picture, but when it all sort of gets wrapped up in one season finale, its kinda a let down. Plus if Sarah Jane is going to be in the episode, K9 could at least be there as well. All the other cool people are there, except K9. Boo. Hopefully he'll make an appearance next week for the big hurrah.

Because I promised

  • Jun. 23rd, 2008 at 11:15 PM

I'm sitting here melting into the yellow fitted sheet on my bed trying to glean information for the next Doctor Who episode from any Youtube related source I can find. And yes, that does make me feel a little bit like a geek, but I'm mature now, I can handle that.
I made a mistake, I watched some more of "I'm not there" today. Watching artsy movies about Bob Dylan is a sure way to warp your mind. It'll make you want to talk in metaphors and riddles and complete nonesense if for no other reason than to force people to think, or ignore you, or maybe taking drugs...but I don't want to encourage people to take drugs so I guess I'll just confuse them.
Ah... artsy Bob Dylan movies and the heat are two sure way to short circut your brain.
So that's where I'm going to stop for now.

The gift of giving

  • Jun. 4th, 2008 at 12:54 AM

After thinking about it a whole lot, I have a strong recommendation for the ultimate belated birthday gift. If anyone could manage getting me over to England to see David Tennant's Hamlet this August, it would be the best gift ever and you would most certainly become my "best friend forever" on a superficial level...which seems to work for people these days.

On an unrelated note: Along the same lines of people going to see Sweeny Todd without knowing it is a musical, and all the problems that caused, a nice chat with a Blockbuster video employee brought up another example of people just not doing their homework before seeing a movie. The store has had many copies of The Orphanage returned because it is not in English. I was shocked, and the employee was annoyed. His words were "They live in California, you would think they would have heard enough spanish for it not to bother them."  I didn't think the movie was meeting that mainstream an audience. Well, good for it then.

I hate Subject lines

  • Jun. 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 PM

so I have decided to post on Livejournal after long last. This desicion stems from the fact that most of my friends on livejournal seem to have strong distrust of facebook and lately I've felt mostly anti-social ignoring this small corner of the world wide web...if it has corners.
Of course the web has corners, a great many of them to for emo kids to hide in.
I don't have really much to say right now and none of it is particularly intelligent or thought provoking...but I'm going to try my best to blog more, since it is supposed to be good for your soul and the future of your journalistic career. I'm relying on you all to help me....mostly by becoming increasingly pushing when I don't post something. This is tough, but you can manage.
So now I just need something to talk about....err...
Lets see.
I'll get back to you all on that.

Yellow Roses and all that Jazz.

I'm leaving for Texas on Friday! For a feis! Yay.
Anyway, I think there's actually only two people in my competition...it doesn't look like they are going to combine it with the one before that has three people! This is weird.
It's a good thing and a bad thing. 1. Two people means I might come home with a trophy! Yay! lol. Bad? Hello, I need more than a one person break before I dance my next round. I mean that's just cruel!
All the same its going to fun, a little awkward, but lots of fun.

In other news,
I applied for an actual job yesterday. Like a real job, not some part-time thing. I applied to be part of a magezine staff. I felt so old doing it! I'm supposedly due some "surprise" at the end of the semester re the newspaper. (*shrug*).

So i'm boarding an aeroplane. Think of me and hope I won't be sitting to some weird old guy the entire flight ( think 20s and cute please) like the trip home from Oireachtas.

This made me laugh.

St. Pat's Day ended Sunday

  • Mar. 21st, 2005 at 10:15 PM

So I, like all other Irish dancers, did the marathon St. Pat's Day. I actually had a short weekend, St. Pat's Day ended about 9:30 on Saturday. Here's a breakdown about what I did.
Thrusday: Did four shows at my mom's Deaf school. Those kids are so cute that I love dancing 4 shows by myself for them. Even if each show is 15 mins long and I can't breath after.
Then I went to Beaumont, danced at this Rotarary Club fundraiser. It was easy, and we made $500. Smooth. They like us there. I danced Three Tunes, but I had to be the guy. The hard part about dancing shows with a lot of beginners/novice is we don't get to do Three Tunes alot. For some reason people find this dance hard to remember.

Friday: Danced at a country club. Bunch of rich old people. Generally easy, and they fed us. I had fish (salmon probably) and salad. It was yummy, but they served the amazing Baily's Irish Cream Cheesecake while I was dancing, so I didn't get any. I think it might be a sign from God that I need to stick to my diet. My pink solo dress doesn't fit, so I have to drop a few pounds. Anyway, at the show my feet kept tripping over the uneven floor. Not fun.

Saturday. I got up late, slept in, it was lovely. Then we headed out to Winchester ( no that's not where the Winchester House is) and I danced at a private party. It was held at a tiny house, in the garage. Riverside people: think Orangecrest. Tiny track house that was meant to make people feel richer than they really are. Well, since they paid us 135 dollars for such dinky party, maybe they aren't too bad off. We danced a bit, taught them a ceili dance and went home. Actually I stayed in town, my mom, another dancer and I went to Marie Calendar's, had dinner. I had chicken salad, big surprise. When it came to desert, I didn't get anything. I couldn't decide what to eat and they were out of muffins (another sign?). So we danced at this really amazing old folks home. It wasn't really a retirement home, more like a retirement center. Actually it felt like a living Clue games: "look I'm in the Library, Look I'm in the Dining Room, Look I'm in the Billard Room, Look I'm on one of the two golf courses." OK, so there's no golf courses in Clue. But these people had some serious cash. We danced on parquet floors, which are great for parties, not so nice for hard shoes. I fell doing a heel sequence in my set, scared everyone. My mom, the other dancers and the old people. But I fell right this time, on mu butt, and only hurt my wrist a bit. It might have helped. In addition to the fee we charged, the group passed the "pot of gold" and we collected an extra $191. We also got a standing ovation. Apparently the people in charge of this place had never had young performers. Most Irish dancers know retirement places love the kids.

Anyway, I slept all day Sunday, and now I'm back to the daily grind. And I still haven't had any cheesecake.

Take the quiz: "Which Random Irish Gaelic Phrase Are You? "

Ta me bitseach mealltach
Ta me bitseach mealltach - 'I'm a sexy bitch.'You're hot stuff, or at least you think you are. You can usually be found in front of a mirror or shopping for the latest fashions so you can be the hottest thing to walk into the club tonight. Now, if only you could find a date...

(I'm not sure if its completely accurate or not...you be the judge)

Sweethearts

  • Feb. 15th, 2005 at 9:24 PM

My sweetheart converstation hears sentence ( which had no white hearts in it cause Mikael ate all those at dance class on Monday):

"Yes dear email pen pal, only you fax me so fine. U R A star, nice girl.

Thursday I went mini golfing with friends, and learned I'm a really really really bad mini golfer, but the point is on of the girls asked me if I wanted to go to a InCahoots (a local club) on Friday night, and I said yes.
It was an intersting experience. I had some guy practiculy stalk me on the dance floor, which was creepy. A fight broke out behind me. Overall though I had a good time.

School started on Monday, I have to go buy my books that I was supposed to read in today...opps.

Update

  • Feb. 8th, 2005 at 9:35 PM

Today I found four four-leaf clovers. That brings my total number of four leaf clovers to six,(or 24 leaves I guess).

I'm still one of the most unluckiest people I know.

My dance teacher found my blue hat, it was in her truck between the back of the cab and the seat, no idea how it got there.

My dad called me during dance class, which was weird because my dad never calls me. Turns out my brother completely wrecked my car, then the idiot got mad cause everyone was mad at him and he left. I don't understand him at all.

Blah...

I'm sick, I've got a sinus infection thing from the weather changing I guess. I've taken everything for it. Drugs, that funky "Airbourne" stuff my mom bought, orange juice and more drugs and still it lingers. It started on Thursday during the dress rehersal for the recital and put me in such a bad mood I actually yelled at a parent (well yelling as much as I do) and lost my blue hat. I'm really mad about the hat, I hate losing things and if I was well and alert I wouldn't have lost it. I think I left on the bed of kelly's truck while I was securing things down and well, you can put together things after that. So I'm going to buy my a new one, once I find another similar.

The recital went really well. Most of the kids were very good and attentive and there were only a few problems. One girl left her dress in the classroom (the one we were using as a dressing room), at the school where the recital is held, on Thursday and I was mad. When she came on Friday I asked why she left it and told her that was not apporpriate. Dad was standing behind me when I said it and I thought he would chew me out for yelling at his angel, so I had a few choice words for him (what can I say I was sick), but I think he saw in my face that I wasn't going to be pushed around tonight and just avoided me. Then this girl doesn't even bring poodle socks, her mom just hands her a pair of white bobby/ankle socks so she looks like the odd ball. What can some parents be thinking?

Other than that things went really well. The kids had a great time, everyone loved the little ones and it was cute to see the little kids in the audience dancing during intermission and after the show. I'm still bummed I couldn't dance in it.

One more week and school starts. For those that haven't heard my school drama: I was accepted to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, but their classes started on Monday. I decided starting at a new school after classes have already started would be too much for me, I still have to work out transportation and money, so I called and the busy admissions lady on the other line said that I'd have to re-submit my transfer application, but she seriously doubted there would be a problem, which is good cause then RCC called to tell me they can't send my transcript cause I still have my student activity fees to pay. Silly school people. I had sent in my transcript request like a week ago. So I'm going to start Fullerton this summer, that way I take the train out there, learn how that works, meet with a consoler and all the fun gummybear stuff.

It's Story Time Kiddos!

  • Jan. 22nd, 2005 at 10:23 PM

The following are two stories I wrote when I was a little kid...way little kid jugding by the spelling errors and grammer. I typed them out on a story program that was contained, if I remember right, on floppy disks that actually flopped that I used on my Apple II GS. First you would make a little picture, then write the story and I was excited at the time to have a color screen. Anyway, here you go, an insight into my early age brillance.

Story 1:
Two robots and two space people live together in their little house. As they lived together the ceatures (sic) wanted to get married. So they got in the space ship. Then they got married. Then they lived happily ever after.

( I must have had an early awareness of pcness...note the "space people" ;) )

Story 2 ( I only have the first page, there appears to have been more):
Once upon a time there were two dolls. They were living dolls. They had a table and a cat and dog. They (sic) cat was blue. One day the boy opened the door and he told his sister that he was going outside to play. Then she told him that he better put his shoes on. So he...

( I guess you can finish the story any way you'd like now! Thanks for reading)

Four more weeks before I can dance again, I'm missing Murrieta Recital :(

What random word are you?
created with QuizFarm.com

Well, I figured some of you might wonder how I'm doing. Here's the amazing part:
I'm walking more or less like a normal human being. I'm still in the cast, but I've been moving about without the crutches, which is cool cause I can carry things. This is a great thing to do! Plus now it is easier to help students. With the crutches teaching steps was impossible, and now I can demostrate a little better. Plus when my brothers run away with my crutches it doesn't matter. I have about 10 more days untill the cast comes off. Wish me luck that it will come off and staty off.
I had a lovely Christmas and recieved a lot of stuff I can't use in my current state, like Dance Dance Revolution. Though it is quite humourous to watch my brothers try to do it. I got a cell phone, which is lovely, but I can't remember the number and I haven't given it out to anyone so no one calls me. I got a theraband set, which is also pretty unusable right now as well and a knitting set, which I'm working on.
There were a great many other things, plus money and a lovely paycheck from RCC. Now I just have to go out and find another job!
The Murrieta studio is going to do an additional recital at the beginning of February. Maybe I'll be strong enough to do a couple of the easier numbers. I hope very much. We had a dance party on the 23rd and it was very nice. The two Peterson kids came and it was lovely to see Sarah again. I think she realizes how much she is missed. The kids got loaded up on sugar and the parents got to meet, these are always good things. Furthermore, lots of money was raised when some of the kids did the gift wrapping fundraiser. Things are looking lovely.
That's enough boring rambling from me. I'm going to watch the second half of Return of the King.
